For the more experienced surfers seeking a challenge, the northern end of the beach offers larger waves and a more thrilling surf experience. South of the Pier is a reef/rock break, where the waves can pump through the pier. Making this a thrill seekers go to for shooting the Pier and carrying the wave through to the north side. The South Side of the Pier wave is a slow, crumbly, and altogether fun if and when the swell is south by southwest running push. You also have Avalanche Rock Jetty which can be very local and dangerous if you are not skilled. If you are skilled, it's an epic fast-breaking left. Travel North a few more yards and you have Middles, the break between Dog Beach and Avalanche. A wide beach break wave, that can serve you if the other spots have saturated lineups. Head up North a bit more, and you land at Dog Beach and the San Diego River Jetty. Most of us locals wont tell you this, but down at Sunset Cliffs is a rare point break reef break. Youll need to have a lot of stamina and skill for this one, but it's well worth it and the trek. One of the massive highlights of Surfing in Ocean Beach! Many breaks, all unique and within walking distance of each other.
